Embracing My Nigerian Heritage: From Shame to Prid
Growing up, I often felt out of place, caught between two worlds. The teasing at school, where I was called names like “Black African” or “Darth Vader,” made me feel ashamed of my heritage. I would insist, “I’m not African, I’m just dark,” hiding behind my American accent as a shield to blend in. But at 36, my journey has transformed. Embracing my Nigerian-American identity has given me newfound pride. Learning the culture, language, and roots that define me has connected me to a history rich with beauty and strength. Today, I celebrate who I am—proudly Nigerian-American.
