Falling in Love Across Cultures: A Nigerian-American's Journey of Love, Lessons, and Resilience
"Meeting my husband on New Year's Eve 2020 was the beginning of a journey I hadn't anticipated. What started as simple Yoruba lessons quickly evolved into a whirlwind romance, as he expressed interest just a week after we first connected. As a Nigerian-American who hadn't visited Nigeria since childhood, his invitation to visit felt like both an adventure and a homecoming. After navigating the maze of visa applications, agency visits, and travel preparations, I was finally set to return to my roots—and to the man I believed would be my future.
Arriving in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti, I felt embraced by a culture that was part of me, yet still unfamiliar. I visited him often, learning to adapt to a new rhythm of life. However, our relationship was tested as I found myself supporting him financially, with him still without steady work. By the time we married in March 2023, I had taken on most of the responsibilities, even funding our wedding. It was a beautiful day, surrounded by family and friends, yet underscored by the weight I’d been carrying alone.
For anyone considering a relationship with someone from another country, my advice is simple: love with an open heart but clear vision. Crossing cultural lines can be thrilling, but it requires resilience, shared values, and, above all, a commitment from both sides. My story serves as a reminder to consider the full picture before taking the leap."
The Cost of Moving to Nigeria: My Experience with Guarantors and Avoiding Scams
Moving to a new country can be thrilling but also filled with unexpected challenges. As I prepared to purchase my apartment in Nigeria, I encountered more than just paperwork—I faced a requirement that took me by surprise: I needed four guarantors to finalize the deal. Amid navigating this hurdle, a well-meaning offer from a hotel staff member almost turned into a costly mistake. Desperation nearly clouded my judgment, but thankfully, my instincts kicked in. Instead of falling for a quick fix, I chose to follow the legal process, learning a valuable lesson in the importance of doing things the right way. For anyone looking to buy property abroad, this experience reminded me that a fresh start deserves caution and clarity—not shortcuts.
A Cautionary Tale: Trust, Vulnerability, and Business Ventures
In the pursuit of connection and partnership, I took a leap of faith that led me across the world to Nigeria. Reuniting with an old friend had sparked new possibilities, but as I dove deeper, I found myself caught between trust and doubt. This journey opened my eyes to the delicate balance between vulnerability and caution, as well as the importance of listening to my own instincts. Reflecting on these experiences, I’ve come away with invaluable lessons on resilience, self-worth, and the strength to walk away when things don't feel right.
Embracing My Nigerian Heritage: From Shame to Prid
Growing up, I often felt out of place, caught between two worlds. The teasing at school, where I was called names like “Black African” or “Darth Vader,” made me feel ashamed of my heritage. I would insist, “I’m not African, I’m just dark,” hiding behind my American accent as a shield to blend in. But at 36, my journey has transformed. Embracing my Nigerian-American identity has given me newfound pride. Learning the culture, language, and roots that define me has connected me to a history rich with beauty and strength. Today, I celebrate who I am—proudly Nigerian-American.

At this moment in my life, I’ve grown beyond past experiences and embraced a philosophy centered on doing what makes me truly happy. My bucket list is long and exciting: moving to Nigeria, relaxing on beautiful beaches, jumping out of a plane, and so much more.
Let’s begin with the big one—moving to Nigeria. Growing up as a Nigerian-American has helped me achieve financial independence, build assets, and accumulate work experience. One of the greatest joys in my life has been the freedom to travel when and where I want. And Nigeria, oh Nigeria! The food, the culture, the music, the language—I love everything about it. Nigerians are more respectful, their cuisine is divine, and they work with passion and dedication.
Embracing My Journey: A Tale of Resilience and Heritage
Born in America and adopted at birth, I grew up feeling like an outsider in my own family. My biological Nigerian mother died during childbirth, and my father, overwhelmed by loss, chose to leave me in America, believing it was best. Raised in a home lacking stability, I found solace in helping others, eventually adopting children of my own.
Now, at 36, I’m embracing my Nigerian roots while reconciling my American upbringing. Through my husband and friends, I’m reconnecting with my heritage, learning to balance two worlds, and redefining who I am.
Lodging at Maximus Suites: Our Experience in Lagos, Nigeria – March 2023
In March 2023, my husband and I stayed at Maximus Suites in Lagos, Nigeria, eager to explore the city. Unfortunately, our experience was marred by a leaking air conditioner, a rat sighting, and bugs in our room. After one uncomfortable night, the hotel staff moved us to another room, but we ultimately decided to cut our trip short and booked an Uber to the airport. While Lagos has much to offer, our stay at Maximus Suites was a reminder to thoroughly research accommodations before traveling.
